How to Order in a Coffee Shop?

Walking into a coffee shop should feel like a treat—not like a pop quiz. But if you’re new to ordering coffee (or just tired of second-guessing yourself at the register), you’re not alone.

This quick guide will help you order confidently in under a minute—whether you want something simple, sweet, strong, iced, or “I don’t know, I just want something good.” If you still want to know more, see our other blog posts or our Coffee Shop Glossary page!

Step 1: Start with one question

Before you get to the counter, pick your answer to one of these:

  • Do you want coffee or not-coffee?
Coffee = brewed coffee, espresso drinks (latte, cappuccino, etc.)
Not-coffee = tea, chai, matcha, hot chocolate

  • Hot or iced?
If you say “iced,” the barista knows the rest.

  • Caffeinated or decaf?
Decaf is totally normal—ask for it anytime.

That’s it. One decision gets you 80% of the way there.

Step 2: Choose your drink style

Here are the most common options, in plain English:

If you want something straightforward

  • Drip coffee / brewed coffee: classic cup of coffee

  • Americano: espresso + hot water (strong, smooth, not milky)

If you want something creamy

  • Latte: espresso + lots of steamed milk (smooth, mellow)

  • Cappuccino: espresso + less milk + more foam (lighter, “airier”)

If you want something sweet

  • Mocha: latte + chocolate

  • Vanilla latte / caramel latte: latte + flavored syrup

If you want something cold

  • Iced latte: espresso + milk over ice

  • Cold brew: coffee steeped cold (often smoother, stronger)

  • Iced coffee: brewed hot then chilled (lighter than cold brew)

Step 3: Pick your size and milk

Most shops will ask size first. If you’re unsure, choose the middle size.

Then decide on milk:

  • Whole milk = richest

  • Skim= balanced

  • Oat milk = creamy, slightly sweet (popular!)

  • Almond milk = lighter, nutty

No need to overthink it—baristas hear all of these all day.

Step 4: Add extras (optional—but easy)

You can skip this completely, or add one thing:

  • Flavor: vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, etc.

  • Sweetness level: “half sweet” is a great move if you don’t like sugary drinks

  • Temperature: “extra hot” (common for to-go)

  • Caffeine level: extra shot, decaf, half-caf

  • Toppings: whip, cinnamon, drizzle

Step 5: Say it in one sentence

Here’s the easiest order format:

Size + hot/iced + drink + milk + flavor (if any)

Examples:

  • “Medium iced latte with oat milk, vanilla.”

  • “Small hot coffee, room for cream.”

  • “Large cold brew, light ice, splash of milk.”

  • “Medium cappuccino, no sugar.”

  • “Small decaf latte, almond milk.”

If you only remember one: “Iced latte with oat milk” will take you far.

What if you don’t know what to get?

Totally fine. Try one of these lines:

  • “I like it sweet and creamy—what do you recommend?”

  • “I usually drink [something]—what’s similar here?”

  • “What’s your most popular drink right now?”

  • “I want something not too sweet—what’s a good choice?”

That’s not “annoying.” That’s literally part of the job.

Quick cheat sheet

  • Latte = milky

  • Cappuccino = foamier

  • Americano = strong, no milk

  • Cold brew = smooth, often stronger

  • Mocha = chocolate
